Drinking in America — by Eric Bogosian
Previews Feb 10

Eric Bogosian burst onto the theatrical scene in the midst of the Reagan 80’s, when upper class conservative society was growing wealthier and more powerful while the lower classes struggled to survive, and the arts were literally starving to death. Bogosian was influenced by this, as well as by an outcropping of performance art happening in New York City, and that lead him to a unique, collage type of theatrical presentation where characters were not tied together by plot, but by theme.

Drinking In America is a shining example of this “Bogosian-esque” theatre. Twelve completely diverse characters relate stories of their lives that are hilarious, darkly ominous, painfully poignant – and always “made in America”.

The title is a bit misleading. Although the characters are caught up in a haze of alcohol and drug use – liquor, cocaine, wine, marijuana, LSD, heroin and the like, the play is not about that. They aren’t focused on this action, nor are they obsessed by its effect on their lives. It is actually incidental; a matter of course – kind of like real life. It is a microscope on American life during a difficult political landscape.

The human animal has many obsessions – all with the hope of producing some form of victory, which in itself is ecstatic.

It is this pool of intoxication that Bogosian’s characters swim in. Drugs and alcohol are certainly intoxicants. They influence us, polarize us, define us, and smokescreen us. Power also intoxicates us. Drinking In America is a cross section of social class in the midst of an American dilemma – an inebriation of power and influence, money and The Dream deferred; the results of Capitalism at its most obscene.

As we enter the second term of a Bush administration, the world in a whirlwind of war, and a teetering economy at home, pay close attention to who and what surrounds you – and who and what creeps inside of you.

Peace and Love,
Robert Hooker

Sounds very interesting. Do you know what time it starts and if it is only on that day? Or is that opening night. I've been wanting to check that place out.
